UNDER MY SKIN at the LITTLE SHUBERT THEATER
THE LITTLE SHUBERT THEATER, 422 W. 42nd St., NY 10036. Opening March 31.
UNDER MY SKIN is a new comedy written by Robert Sternin and Prudence Fraser (the creative team behind television hits such as The Nanny and Who’s the Boss?) about the three things we all desperately want–love, sex, and health insurance that opens May 15th.
Tony-Award nominee, Kerry Butler (Broadway: Xanadu, Les Miserables, Hairspray, Rock of Ages, and Beauty and the Beast) plays Melody Dent, a health insurance company temp with pelvic cramps, a teenager, a father with dementia, and no health insurance. Through a hilarious twist, she and the arrogant, greedy owner of the company, Harrison Baddish III (Matt Walton of the film Burn After Reading, TV: One Life to Live, and off-Broadway: Hair) get to know the inner workings of each others lives. (Can’t say more or it will be a spoiler.)
I think director KIRSTEN SANDERSON could have initially toned down the part of the sex-crazed Nanette played by MEGAN SIKORA (Broadway: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Succeed in Business, and Promises, Promises,) but before long, we get to see Nannette’s deeper, but still madcap self. Casey Dent (ALLISON STRONG Broadway: Bye Bye Birdie, and Mama Mia) has just the right mix of snark, neediness, and affection to pull off the role of Melody’s teenage daughter. MATT WALTON’s every line, every gesture, was perfect. The audience roared as DEIDRE FRIEL (Broadway: Leap of Faith) played a loud-mouthed, broad-hipped, lovable angel, and EDWARD JAMES HYLAND (Broadway: Machinal, Arcadia, Festen, The Man Who Had All The Luck) played the funny and heartbreaking Poppa Sam.
KATE LOPREST (Broadway: First Date, Hairspray, Wonderland, Xanadu, Drowsy Chaperone, and HBO’S Boardwalk Empire) smashingly pulled off more than one role as did ANDREW POLK (Off-Broadway Mouth to Mouth.)
UNDER MY SKIN‘s creative team includes scenic designer Stephen Dobay, Costume Designer Lara de Bruihn, lighting by Driscoll Otto, and sound by Jamie Bullard. Production is led by lead producer, Marla McNally Phillips and co-producer Marcy Casey.
