#Rattle, a lit mag that has open submissions

Before I get to our special calls, I want to emphasize the fact that we are always open to submissions from any poet, in any style, on any topic. Half of every issue is open poetry, and our general submissions window never closes.

If you’re wondering what to submit: We try to keep the magazine as eclectic as possible. I’m always in search of ideas, images, metaphors, concepts, and perspectives that I’ve never heard before. Poetry should be expansive – I want to see the world in new ways. We love lyrical poetry; we love meter and rhyme, free verse, and experimentation. We love long poems and short poems – don’t get hung up on styles. Send us your favorite unpublished poems and they might become ours, too.

The 2015 Rattle Young Poets Anthology has just released, and we’re offering a free copy with all print orders placed at our website this December. The second annual stand-alone anthology features delightful and poignant poetry from writers age 15 and younger. We’ve put poetry back in the news with our Poets Respond series. Every Sunday we publish a poem online that responds in some way to the news of the previous week. The results have been incredibly moving, and demonstrate, I think, what’s missing in our media (heart?). We thought it would be fun to generate more poetry with a quarterly challenge. For the winter, this photograph was chosen by issue #46 cover artist James Bernal. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to write a poem in response to this image. Two winners will receive $25 and publication online this January.
