Two-time Tony Award-winner, playwright Joe DiPietro (Memphis, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change) brings us his new comedy Clever Little Lies, a lovely throwback to the Broadway matinee of the 60’s or 70’s. (Except perhaps for the mention of blow jobs and mother fuckers.)
Clever Little Lies is the story of Billy (George Merrick—Honeymoon in Vegas, South Pacific) cheating on his wife and the mother of his three- month-old daughter, Jane (Kate Wetherhead—Submissions Only, Spelling Bee, Legally Blonde,) a new mother. His mother, Alice, (Marlo Thomas) desperate to save her son’s marriage, wrestles them into coming over for cheesecake. Bill Sr. (Greg Mullavey—Romantic Comedy, Rumors, The Sisters Rosensweig) is browbeaten into going along with her. Lots of hilarious and tense moments leading to a revelation that could break apart the whole family. The expressions on Bill Sr.’s face, both comic and tragic, tugged at the audiences’ hearts. Director, David Saint (Proof, George is Dead, The Toxic Avenger) pulled memorable performances from these four gifted actors.
The play was mostly set in Alice and Bill’s well-appointed home. The light projections on panels to represent the suburban landscape and the roadway worked beautifully. Kudus to scenic designer Yoshi Tanokura and lighting designer Christopher J. Bailey.
