Hi Rochelle, former student of yours (Summer 2023) here, just happened to check you site and saw that we have both been watching classic noir films lately…
Wanted to mention the YouTube channel DK Films/Noir has a pretty good collection as well (many sans commercials)….
A couple titles I saw recently worth mentioning: Woman on the Run (really cool SF setting), The Lineup (SF as well, with shots of Sutro baths), and The Siege of Pinchgut (with Aldo Ray)….
Just wanted to share! I’m still taking courses through UCLA Extension and Stanford Continuing Education, trying to sharpen my craft… I’m about 25k words into my first draft of a Mystery/Thriller type novel…
But, still, planning to go back to those creative nonfiction stories I wrote for your course about my grandparents… Seeing how each might merit a book of their own, with room for overlap, of course… Being able to see what just might be a better short story, as well.
Just wanted to say, hello. And I always think fondly about your Power Up course as the first one to get my back onto the writing horse, so to speak. I guess it could be a writing bicycle.
Hope your writing is going well. And I subscribed to your newsletter, so, looking forward to keeping beat.
So happy to hear from you, John. Thanks for the tip about the Youtube channel. Noir is a great model for any type of writing. It teaches character, suspense, drama, pacing, conflict. Oh, yes, and backstory. Doesn’t every detective have his own secret that compels him to go after the perp? Fondly, Rochelle
