DEITER ROTH–an organic, earth-friendly artist
Deiter Roth (1930–1998) Swiss artist born in Germany, was a painter, sculptor, and made films and videos, but what we see now at the MOMA is his most radical work—prints, books, and multiples fittingly called Wait, Later This Will Be Nothing editions. Forget art supplies. For this series, Roth pressed cheese onto cardboard, utilized bananas—the inner goosh along with the peels, plastic toys dipped in melted chocolate, variations on printed postcards. One of my favorites is his sausage casing filled with a ground copy of a great Swedish book that Roth called, Literature Sausage. Another is this rabbit made totally out of rabbit poop called RABBIT-SHIT-RABBIT.
