Celebration with Friend

My friend, Wanru, just passed her driving test, so we went out to lunch to celebrate. Here we are toasting with bowls of a soy drink desert.

Beijing is so much like Manhattan (even more congested) that you get around by foot or mass transit. So she never drove before and she did it and she’s done so many other amazing things in the short time she’s been in this country. (I met her in a Shakespeare class. Imagine how challenging that is for someone new to English.) But we didn’t dare drive into Great Neck where folks make u-ie’s over double lines, double park, and door dings are de rigueur. We skipped to town and back.
